This system, although excellent, has the downside of being expensive and bulky, and often requires instruction by an informed parent to make it fit into the boot of a small car.

Buggies and prams are great for strolling on smooth ground and in town, but become a liability when facing the challenge of the seashore. Sand, pebbles and great big rocks form an assault course with shingle being the most impenetrable. All-terrain buggies have become popular as they can tackle different surfaces but although they are often lightweight, they too are rather bulky. And swivel wheels? Whoever thought they were a good idea…?

Baby slings
Carrying a baby in your arms is comforting but not always practical, so it might be worth considering buying a sling or a carrier. Many slings carry the baby in an upright, forward-facing position that requires the child to be at least two months old.
