Some babies don't take kindly to this position, often
emerging hot and frustrated with a squashed face indented with buttons and
straps. The sling gets thrown into the depths of the broom cupboard never
to be seen again.
A softer option is a sling that enables a baby to be carried from birth, lying
across the parent's body, supported by the sling. These slings help a mother
to breastfeed intimately and allow for tasks (like peeling potatoes, for instance)
to be done standing up. One of the nicest carriers I've seen is the Tri-Cotti
baby sling. Made from two soft, stretchy bands, this simple sling fits snugly
across the parent's shoulders and can carry a baby from newborn to two years
of age. It comes in three colours and sizes to cater for our multitude of
body shapes. The sling is loosely based on the carrying methods of nomadic
families and has no buckles, straps, buttons or zips.
The Tri-Cotti makes carrying a baby comfortable as weight
is evenly distributed across the body, eliminating the need to slouch or hip-hitch
which can cause pain across the shoulders, chest and back.
