nappy technology

disposable nappies were introduced in the 1970s and were originally made up of paper pads with plastic overpants.

since then advances have been made in the materials, resulting in a thinner and lighter product. nowadays, they are typically made of cellulose pulp (from soft wood tree plantations), polypropylene/polyethylene (plastics made from fossil fuel), a super-absorbent polymer (a polyacrylate polymer, made from acrylic acid) and small amounts of tape, elastics and adhesive. washable nappies are usually pure cotton (sometimes organic cotton) and unbleached. washable nappies need to be wrapped in either reusable plastic or organic woollen overpants to prevent wetting and leakage.
